✈️ISTANBUL: STREET 🐈CATS+DOGS AND VEGAN FOOD (Baklava, Bulgur, Turkish Pasta & More)🍲

I recently spent two weeks in Istanbul, so in this episode of Bianca's Kitchen I'm sharing the vegan food that I found and a bit about the many street cats and streets dogs..

I stayed in Beyoğlu / Cihangir, about ten walking minutes from the famous Taksim Square. It is a pretty, vibrant neighborhood with plenty of cafés, bars and shops. A lot of beautiful old architecture can be found in this area. Beyoğlu is crowded with young people, and many young local women dress like Westerners, so I didn't feel any pressure to adjust my clothing style (I didn't visit any mosques, though, which always have a dress code).

The neighborhood borders İstiklâl Caddesi, Istanbul's main shopping street with stores like Sephora, Mango and H&M. Beyoğlu is located on a hill, and walking uphill in humid summer heat is very exhausting, so I don't recommend going there in August, the hottest month. ● Restaurant Vegan Istanbul, Firuzağa, Türkgücü Cd. No:51, Beyoğlu, Istanbul https://www.instagram.com/vegan_istanbul This vegan restaurant is family owned and one plate with three options from the vegan bufett was 25 Lira (less than $3). I enjoyed their falafal, seitan, bulgur „meat“ balls, Turkish pizza (Lahmacun), spinach, eggplant and Turkish pasta. They also have homemade vegan cake and cookies! ● Baklava, the famous oriental layered pastry dessert, is traditionally made of filo pastry and filled with chopped nuts and sweetened with syrup or honey. The latter ingredient as well as the use of butter make it a dessert that isn't vegan friendly, but the version by Vegan Istanbul shown in the video uses vegan ingredients only. One piece of baklava was 5 Lira at Vegan Istanbul. ● Turkish delight (lokum) is a family of confections based on a gel of starch and sugar. It comes in many different flavors and some varieties aren't vegan, so always make sure to look for a brand that is explicitly vegan. ● The Vegan Standard cheese blocks: https://www.thestandardvegan.com ● Support pianist Sarper Duman who takes care of street cats in his Istanbul neighborhood: https://www.instagram.com/sarperduman/ https://www.patreon.com/helpanimals ● I recommend the Bosphorus tour that Turyol offers (see 0:19 in video)! Admission was a bargain at 25 Lira which is less than $3 (September 2021) and the tour took almost one and a half hours! Start: Karaköy pier, End: Eminönü pier (opposite ends of the Galata Bridge) https://www.turyol.com
